The 16th Annual Congress of Midwives of South Africa

Date: 20 to 23 August 2019
Venue: Groenkloof Campus, University of Pretoria

South Africa, one of the most beautiful countries in the world known for its rainbow nation, is hosting the 16th Annual Congress of Midwives in 2019 in Pretoria, Gauteng province. Pretoria is rich in history from colonialism to democracy.

In 2019, SOMSA is celebrating the achievements of midwives. According to the 2017 Saving Mothers Annual report, the institutional maternal mortality ratio is approximately 134 deaths per 100 000 live births. Although this number has declined considerably, midwives are facing enormous professional challenges daily. Too few midwives in units, a shortage in the supply of commodities and the large burden of foreign women, with the accompanying language and cultural challenges, contribute to high levels of stress and burnout in midwives.

The 2019 congress, therefore, focusses on how midwives can continue to provide high quality professional, ethical and sensitive care amidst all these challenges. The congress will be held at the Groenkloof Campus of the University of Pretoria, which is surrounded by historic and architecturally magnificent buildings such as the Union Buildings and the Voortrekker Monument, the biggest monument in Africa, as well as Freedom and Memorial parks. For centuries, midwives have assisted women during childbirth and in their reproductive years. A rich selection of experts will be focussing on the increasingly critical role midwives play in the quality of maternal and newborn care in South Africa. The 2019 SOMSA congress provides a platform for participants to have an interactive four-day event to share their knowledge and skills to promote clinical competence and sustainability of good midwifery practice in all aspects of the profession.
