Midwives in South Africa are the front-line caregivers and back bone in maternal and child health care. The pressure is on midwives to meet the challenges of providing quality care to both women and children. It is imperative for midwives to continuously improve their clinical competence whilst simultaneously continuing to maintain, reinforce and maximize their focus on interpersonal care. We must all assume the commitment to be active players in all aspects of our profession in order to contribute to the development of midwifery.Find out more…

PASSING OF DR. ELGONDA BEKKER, PRESIDENT OF THE SOCIETY OF MIDWIVES OF SOUTH AFRICA (SOMSA)
It is with deep sadness that SOMSA announces the passing of our beloved President Dr Elgonda Bekker. She peacefully departed this world on the 4th July 2021 at around 3am, at a private hospital in Bloemfontein.
Elgonda dedicated her time and contributed greatly to strengthening the midwifery profession at local, regional and international level. Throughout her professional life, she advocated for availability of accessible, acceptable affordable and quality maternal and child health care for all childbearing families.
The family is busy with the arrangements as this terrible ordeal happened during the weekend. Further details will follow in due course.
The world and the midwifery fraternity will never be the same without Dr. Bekker.
